So this is just going to be a total rant. IPv6 is, in theory, a solution to many things, including the dwindling IPv4 address space. IPv6 was a draft in 1997(!), and became a real Internet Standard in 2017. And, quite frankly, it’s one of those things that just adds too much hassle for not enough benefit.Continue reading
So if I said the words “Lightweight Directory Access Protocol”, do you feel my pain? if you don’t, keep reading. Otherwise, you likely know exactly where this is going to be going.
And for the record: this is something that I’ve struggled with for about 8 months, and I think it’s getting close to the point where I really should just give up… but I won’t.Continue reading
If that title isn’t a dead giveaway, I’m not happy. But yet I will somehow manage to vent my frustrations and explain something at the same time. Today: SNMP, or, “How to gather lots of stats on remote machines,” or, “Because you thought CVS was hard to wrap your head around.”Continue reading
See, I have this love-hate thing with Apple Inc. I love the design of their operating systems, but I hate… just about everything else. And with the release of macOS 11.0 “Big Sur”, well, yeah, that took away most of what I like.
I get that it’s a move towards unifying the fragmented state of Apple device OSes, but still… I really think we lost something in the process.Continue reading
Do… do I even have to say anything about this? I got that less than a week ago and it’s, while still functional, it is now useless. Not just from a cosmetic standpoint, more from a “I don’t like microscopic shards of glass in my fingers” standpoint. At least the inner display is fine and that’s the important one. LG… we need to have a talk.Continue reading
So that is a picture of my Switch… and before you get bent out of shape, there’s a glass screen protector on top of a microfiber glasses cleaning cloth separating the screen from the linoleum table surface.
Either way, you cannot tell it from that picture, but I wanted to upgrade that part right in the center of the frame: the console kickstand, give it something a little more rigid. Well as it turns out, that will be impossible without some real effort put in.Continue reading
It’s safe to say that I’ve seen my fair share of T440 ThinkPads in my time, and there’s one common element on all of them that just downright bugs me.
If you ever take the back off one (and not snap it off somehow), and decide to unscrew the heatsink, you’ll see two dies: a larger one on the right (CPU) and a smaller one on the left (GPU). Those little shiny blocks are the heart of that machine… and they’re so tiny too!
Now if you look closer, you’ll see that the GPU die is bare. Oops.Continue reading
You know the feeling when a system that you’ve used for years, and trusted, suddenly throws a curveball at you with a fun “Yeah you know this simple and concrete rule that’s never broken? Well in this one exception, it is, and nobody ever points it out. Have fun!”Continue reading
