T440s Have Some Wonderful Cooling

It’s safe to say that I’ve seen my fair share of T440 ThinkPads in my time, and there’s one common element on all of them that just downright bugs me.

If you ever take the back off one (and not snap it off somehow), and decide to unscrew the heatsink, you’ll see two dies: a larger one on the right (CPU) and a smaller one on the left (GPU). Those little shiny blocks are the heart of that machine… and they’re so tiny too!

Now if you look closer, you’ll see that the GPU die is bare. Oops.

So I have no doubt, given Cloudflare’s metrics, that plenty have seen this site. They’ve probably also experienced one of the longest load times in existence, default fonts, and broken icons. Well, I just about fixed it. The Problem There were two main problems: The first is that a few directories referenced in the template didn’t exist by default. So let’s set the stage. You’re writing a blog. This blog is kept in a Git repository. “Great!” You think, knowing that you can make changes from any of your computers, and just git pull on the server to bring everything down. Because how Nginx works, you don’t need to reload anything, the new content is available immediately. There’s just one problem: this means you need to SSH into the server to pull everything, which requires SSH into a border server first, tunneling your connection through another one. Continue reading
